Grade 2 Math in Kindergarten
In 2012, the State Board of Education approved revisions for the mathematics standards to be fully implemented in 2014-15. Due to these changes, it is critical that school districts begin aligning these new standards and teaching these new TEKS (standards) starting in the 2013-14 school year.
The new TEKS will affect all grade levels, Kindergarten through Pre-Calculus. At every grade level, current TEKS have been shifted down to lower grades and newly written TEKS were added. However, the incoming 6th graders (2013-14) feel the greatest impact of the changes with 55% of the standards being new to that grade level. School districts have taken measures to help support these learners through the transition and also prepare them for the required standards starting in 2014. However I would like to break the jargon for the parents to understand how it will affect their kids beginning this school year.
What are TEKS and standards? The TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) are the state standards for what learners, at each grade level and in each subject, should know and be able to do. The State’s accountability testing system – STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) tests learners on this knowledge.
Why are changes made in Math Curriculum? In April, 2012, the State Board of Education (SBOE) approved revision for the mathematics TEKS to be fully implemented by the 2014-15 school year.
The State Board of Education (SBOE) mandates the curriculum standards (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) for all schools in Texas. The SBOE “Instructional Review” committee regularly reviews curriculum standards and makes revisions that all schools must implement. The “Instructional Review” committee is comprised of educators, parents, business and industry representatives, and employers.
Who will be impacted and when? Changes to the Math curriculum – Kindergarten through Pre-Calculus-will officially be required starting the 2014-15 school year. The greatest impact will be felt at the middle school level—especially 6th grade.
The school districts have to get the kids ready for the new increased standards and TEKs been added to the curriculum. The Kindergarten and above grades will be dealing with more rigorous curriculum.
How are the Math standards changing? At every grade level, current TEKS have been shifted down to lower grades and newly written TEKS were added which requires new curriculum at each grade level. So Kindergarten will also be studying some standards from grade 1 and 2.
