The objective of this article is to provide and empower parents with an overview about STAAR and give information regarding the curriculum known as reporting categories. The students are tested on these official performance categories and other policies regarding STAAR.
STAAR is an acronym for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. It is the state-mandated testing program for students in grades 3 through 12. In elementary and middle school, assessments are designed to evaluate progress and to make sure students are meeting grade-level expectations. The STAAR assessments for grades 3-5 focus on content taught during the current academic year rather than the knowledge and skills learned over multiple years. Performance on STAAR tests in grade 5 is used to determine placement in more rigorous pre-Advanced Placement classes in middle school.
