STAAR is an acronym for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. It is the state-mandated testing program for students in grades 3 through 12. In elementary and middle school, assessments are designed to evaluate progress and to make sure students are meeting grade-level expectations. The STAAR assessments for grades 3-5 focus on content taught during the current academic year rather than the knowledge and skills learned over multiple years. Performance on STAAR tests in grade 5 is used to determine placement in more rigorous pre-Advanced Placement classes in middle school.
